One of the more lighthearted White House events, the National Thanksgiving Turkey Presentation and Pardoning Ceremony, takes place each year just before the Thanksgiving holiday. Following the annual White House ceremony on Wednesday, November 24, 2010, the pardoned National Thanksgiving Turkey and the runner up (always present and also pardoned, just in case the National Turkey is not able to fulfill the obligations of the position) will be transported to nearby George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate in Northern Virginia. In recent years, the pardoned Thanksgiving turkeys have traveled to Walt Disney World in Orlando and to Disneyland in Anaheim.
The National Thanksgiving Turkey will receive a ceremonial Mount Vernon welcome at 12:45 p.m., complete with a trumpet fanfare and the reading of a proclamation. A horse-drawn carriage guided by 18-century re-enactors will deliver the turkey to a custom-built pen, where visitors will be able to see him throughout the Christmas at Mount Vernon celebration until January 6, 2011. The turkey's holiday neighbor will be Aladdin, an adorable Christmas camel like one that George Washington had on the estate grounds to entertain his guests during the Christmas of 1787.

Once the holiday season ends, the Thanksgiving turkey will join the runner up at Mount Vernon's nationally recognized livestock facility. Both turkeys will continue to live at Mount Vernon for the rest of their lives.
